Nicole and Sean’s wedding at Portland Crystal Ballroom was a lot about music. Sean is a sound engineer and they due to music, as such, music is a big part of their life. Their wedding reflected that! They had records as place mats, music posters printed for their wedding, and custom drum sticks as favors. Crystal Ballroom is a really fun venue and I love shooting there. Lots of architecture, great floor and a positive energy.
Here are some of the vendors we worked with on this Crystal Ballroom wedding:
The starting day of Portland Lindy Exchange is finally posted here. The event was at the great Tiffany Center Crystal Ballroom where I shot one of my very first weddings in Portland. Can somebody remind me who the bands on each three days were?
It is with great sadness I learned Frankie Manning passes away today. He was an amazing dancer, and has been teaching workshops event his year, at the age of 95. He was scheduled to be in Portland later this year. Earlier this month we photographed a shim sham event by Denise Steele that was done by him. The video of it was to be shown at his 95th birthday. I was able to attend some of his workshops and one thing I learned from him was to always smile while dancing. He had an infectious energy. He will be missed.
Manning and his partner Fredi Washington are credited by creating the first air step or an aerial at a 1935 competition at the famous Savoy Ballroom. He was also the chreographer for the famous Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers. On his birthdays he insisted on dancing with as many women as his age.
I had the pleasure of attending Portland Lindy Exchange this year as well. It was a blast. Due to my travel schedule, I am only able to post Day 2 at this point, but check back in about 10 days and I will post the other days as well.
I was hoping to attend the ball when the phone rang and I was invited to cover this event at the beautiful Tiffany Center! What a coincidence! The decorations at the Tiffany Center Crystal Ballroom was by FireWorks! events. I have done couple weddings there before, but this was my first non-wedding event. As a bonus, Stolen Sweets were playing so I had a chance to practice my swing dancing! In addition, BodyVox dance company did a great performance on the stage!
Portland has a great swing dance community and they came together to host the 2008 Portland Lindy Exchange. Some of you might remember the pictures from the 2006 exchange here. I can’t believe it has been two years!
I was able to attend all three nights, however, the second night was right after a fantastic but long wedding I shot, so I didn’t bring my camera that night. Since I have not been out dancing as much lately, I didn’t take as many photos but rather took advantage of the great crowds and got my dancing fix in. Despite that, there are still over 200 photos.
This was a very fun wedding to shoot! Cheri and Dock are great people. They recently went through a very hard time with Cheri’s mom passing. But it seemed like it brought all the family together. It was a very touching wedding throughout. The reception was at the Crystal Ballroom, my favorite place to dance! I have been looking forward to shooting there for a while! The decorations were top notch!
I am more of a right brain engineer kind (except photography, I guess!) but these kind of events makes you wonder: Cheri asked her mom on her last days to send her a signal that she was there at the wedding. As soon as Cheri started walking down the aisle, the whole church shook. It was incredible!
