Photography Exhibition at the Architechtural Heritage Center of Portland

Here is a cool photography exhibit I learned about. I love old style architecture, and Portland has plenty of historic homes. My last three places were on average 95 years old. Architectural Heritage Center also has some great workshops. Check it out.

First Friday at the AHC!Irvington NE Knott

This Friday, May 1st 4pm - 6pm

Photography Exhibition
and Sale
Historic homes are about more than great exterior details: dentils and rafter tails, leaded glass, and Ionic columns… they’re also about how their owners fit comfortably into the timeless styles and atmosphere that these homes embody. The Irvington Home Tour has been showing folks this intimate aspect of historic homes for over 40 years, with over 1000 visitors each year personally touring historic homes in the neighborhood.
Since 2002, the Tour has documented the great interiors that those visitors saw, in photos on its website:, where tens of thousands of additional visitors each year see beautifully restored interior spaces and the furnishings that make them “home”.
Now for a brief time you can seen those photo images as they were meant to be seen — in lushly printed photographic prints, not in tiny web images — at a photo exhibit running the month of May at the Architectural Heritage Center. To launch the exhibit, the Irvington Home Tour Committee has joined with the AHC to present a free “First Friday” Home Tour Photographs event this Friday, May 1, from 6pm to 8pm at the AHC, 701 SE Grand Ave., Portland. Light refreshments will be served.
Approximately 50 images will be on display at this event, including historic images from the early days of Irvington. All images will be available for sale at the First Friday event.  15% of all sales will be donated to the AHC and the remainder of profits to the Irvington Community Association’s Charitable Giving Program.

Frankie Manning - May 26, 1914 - April 27, 2009

It is with great sadness I learned Frankie Manning passes away today. He was an amazing dancer, and has been teaching workshops event his year, at the age of 95. He was scheduled to be in Portland later this year. Earlier this month we photographed a shim sham event by Denise Steele that was done by him. The video of it was to be shown at his 95th birthday. I was able to attend some of his workshops and one thing I learned from him was to always smile while dancing. He had an infectious energy. He will be missed.

Manning and his partner Fredi Washington are credited by creating the first air step or an aerial at a 1935 competition at the famous Savoy Ballroom. He was also the chreographer for the famous Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers. On his birthdays he insisted on dancing with as many women as his age.

Here is a video of him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pMDf4ciCRs

Amy and Matt’s Mazatlan Wedding at Mayan Sea Garden in Mexico

Mazatlan is my new favorite spot in Mexico I think. I am so glad Amy & Matt chose us as their Mazatlan wedding photographer at Mayan Sea Garden so we could visit this beautiful city in Mexico. It is a city of  400k people, and primarily the industry is either Mazatlan weddings, shrimp fishing or tourism (biggest shrimps I ever seen!)

Amy is one of those brides who is low key but super organized. Everything was well planned, but you never got the feeling that there was an ounce of stress the entire time. She created a wonderful Mazatlan travel guide with her mom, and it was better than any travel book on Mazatlan I ever seen. I will be posting it here so other Mazatlan brides can use it for their Mazatlan wedding or just as a Mazatlan wedding travel guide! We also joined the wedding party for a great Mazatlan city tour the day before the Mazatlan wedding and also at the rehearsal dinner. Homey, who is a licensed travel guide, is  a good friend of the family and is very knowledgeable and friendly, and he showed us all over the city. Since we had a day after session planned (I will post that later), he also took notes of places I liked.

We stayed at the Pueblo Bonito Mazatlan (a sister resort to Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay) and zipped around town in the fun Pulmonia’s, the open air taxis that literally mean pneumonia in Spanish. So much fun! Pueblo Bonito Mazatlan is a nice resort, with kitchen in rooms, so that was great for some cooking, but next time I will book the Pueblo Bonito Emerald Bay - it is so amazing.

The wedding day, we took the pulmonia to the Mayan Sea Garden. It is a beautiful resort, in Nuevo Mazatlan. We took some pictures of Amy and Matt getting ready, a few group shots and then to the reception. Amy looked beautiful and Matt had some tears when they first saw each other. It was a great day for photography. The sunset wedding ceremony was officiated by Pastor Jorge, another long time friend of Amy’s parents, and he sang a beautiful song to them (and later to his wife too, what a great voice!). Both ceremony and reception were at Mayan Sea Garden.

The rest of the day was punctuated by a gorgeous sunset. Amy, Matt and Sydney took a little time off from the wedding and went to the beach at sunset and we got some great shots there too. Mariachi’s were playing some great music to set the ambiance. One of the mariachi’s also decided to taste the cake a little ahead of time - I caught him in the act, check out the photos below! The cake was decorated with sea shels and a Mazatlan cake topper and was by Mama Dulci.

Associate Coverage: Irene and Jeff’s Romantic Hawaiian Beach Wedding

Our friends Irene and Jeff had their beautiful sunrise wedding on a stunning beach in Kihei on the Hawaiian island of Maui.  We met up with them a few days beforehand at the amazing Old Lahina Luau in Lahaina.  The luau was rated the best in Maui, and I think it was lived up to it’s name.  Great food, great dancing, and an over all great atmosphere.  Their wedding day started before the sun even appeared, we got ready at their hotel, and then we all headed to a nearby beach for the ceremony, it was very romantic!  Jeff is an avid golfer, so their reception was at the Wailea Golf Club where Jeff and his friends had played golf all day the day before.  After their wedding day, they started their honeymoon all the way in Kauai, leaving us all back in Maui…Oh darn!
